601,730 — almost 2,000 fewer than the number who had left Mt. Sinai (603,550 — Numbers 1.46) and soon thereafter at Kadesh refused to enter the Promised Land, “because of unbelief” (Hebrews 3.19). They had listened to the voice of the ten spies who had said, “We are not able to go up against the people, for they are stronger than we are” (Numbers 13.31), and consequently “they were overthrown [laid low] in the wilderness” (1 Corinthians 10.5). Now with even fewer fighting men in their ranks, a new generation of Israel will conquer Canaan — not by their own strength, but by the Lord’s.
