Week 5, Day 1 — Genesis 49-50

Series: 2024 Bible Reading

And now, a minute with the Word…

When Jacob — the father of Joseph, through whom the Egyptians had survived the famine — died in Egypt, the Egyptians provided for and participated in his mourning, and in his body’s return to and burial in Canaan, so much so that the Canaanites marveled (Genesis 50.1-14). But when Joseph died, nothing — no mourning, no funeral, no procession — nothing (Genesis 50.26). This stark contrast points toward the Egyptians’ changed disposition toward the Hebrews, even within Joseph’s lifetime — a noteworthy change that sets the stage for the opening of Exodus.
