And now, a minute with the Word…

Understanding and edification — these two words appear, in various forms, sixteen times in 1 Corinthians 14. In the chaos of Corinthian church assemblies, with their undisciplined use of miraculous spiritual gifts (especially tongue-speaking), these two important purposes had been ignored, to the spiritual detriment of saints and unbelievers alike. These purposes — understanding and edification — must not be neglected in our assemblies today. If our worship is consumed by thoughtless rote and emotionless ritual, in words or actions, it is vain to think that it will please the Lord, benefit the participants, or convict the observers, any more than in Corinth. Paul’s counsel to them and to us? We can and must do better.
