Luke 6

Series: 2023 Bible Reading

And now, a minute with the Word…

Luke 6 tells of a few important events that take place. First there is a controversy with the Pharisees regarding what can and cannot be done on the Sabbath. Then Jesus selects the 12 apostles and delivers the Sermon on the Mount. he Pharisees continually monitored Jesus movements looking to criticize Him at every turn. The Sabbath was a primary point of contention throughout. While Jesus and His disciples roamed through a corn field, they picked ears of corn and ate them. This was immediately deemed inappropriate by the Pharisees as this occurred on the Sabbath and harvesting plants on that day was forbidden. Also on the Sabbath, Jesus heals a man’s shriveled hand. This too is rejected by the Pharisees as being improper.Next, Luke 6 describes the Sermon on the Mount. Here people migrated from all around Judea as well as the coast. Many of them sought healing or contact with Jesus. Jesus provided teachings, cast out demons and healed all in need.

In the next section of Luke 6 Jesus taught his disciples. He warned them that they would face adversity in following him. To them he offered blessings for the poor, the hungry, the weeping and to those who were hated. He also spoke to those of woe. He then issued warnings to the rich, the well fed and to all who were spoken well of.Jesus famously speaks of loving your enemies as this is a good exercise for the soul. Jesus then preaches about judging others. He proclaims to not judge or condemn others so as to avoid judgments and condemnations against you. He further states to forgive and you shall be forgiven, as well as to give and it shall be given back to you.  Jesus speaks directly to his disciples using examples of the blind leading the blind and students following teachers as preparation for becoming leaders. In conclusion He says to them “No good tree bears bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit.” Finally, He asks them to hear his words and put them into practice.
