Luke 4

Series: 2023 Bible Reading

And now, a minute with the Word…

Luke 4 talks about Jesus’ time fasting in the desert and overcoming the devil’s temptations. He also preaches to a crowd and heals a man plagued by evil spirits.

Luke 4 begins by talking about the temptations of Jesus, and shows us how a proper foundation in the Word of God assisted Jesus in refuting the temptations. Jesus went to the desert and stayed in the wilderness for 40 days. In those days, He did not eat or drink anything. Jesus was tempted by the devil in the desert. He was told by the devil to turn the stone into bread for food and to command kingdoms.

Jesus later returns to His hometown. He enters the temple on the Sabbath day and reads from the book of Isaiah. He states that He is the chosen one. He angers His listeners by saying that a prophet is not accepted in His home country. Jesus continues to address the audience. He tells them something radical by saying that as God’s chosen people, Jews felt that the love of God extended to them, but not to the Gentiles. Jesus then says that the mercy of the Lord will be shown to the Gentiles. This angers the Jews.

Jesus then went to Capernaum and taught the people on the Sabbath days. Many people were astounded by his teachings because his words were powerful. There was also a man in the synagogue who was plagued by evil spirits. Jesus healed him and then went to Simon’s house where He healed many people, including the Simon’s mother-in-law.
