Walking With God

Are you walking with God? Considering you are reading this, I would venture to say that is what you are striving to do. It may be a rhetorical question. However, it is a question we must continually ask ourselves.

Are you walking with God? Let us consider the example of Noah and what it meant for him to walk with the Lord.

Genesis 6.8-9 tells us “Noah found favor in the eyes of the LORD” and he “was a righteous man, blameless in his time. Noah walked with God.” The reality of walking with God is not impossible. Noah was in a cruel, corrupt world. Genesis 6.5 describes how “the wickedness of man was great on the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.” Yet Noah still walked with God and was obedient to him. Despite the wicked nature of the world, we can still walk with God!

The requirement of walking with God is faith and obedience. Noah trusted and believed in God. As a result, it caused him to act and to obey. The next few chapters of Genesis describe him receiving instructions and faithfully following them. Genesis 6.22 says “Noah did according to all that God had commanded him.” Noah could have claimed how much he trusted in God, but with no obedience, would it have mattered? The Hebrew author tells us “by faith Noah prepared an ark” (Hebrews 11.7). Faith leads to obedience of God’s instructions. To walk with God, we must obey all of what He commands!

Noah needed to build the ark because God instructed him, but also because judgment was coming. The LORD was going to “blot out man from the face of the land” (Genesis 6.7). The result of walking with God is life and not death. Noah, the one walking with God, was delivered with his family and all else perished. Life is found in the Lord. Everything else leads to death. Paul describes this dichotomy in Romans 6.23 by saying, “the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” To have life, we must be in Christ and walk with God!

Walk with God! It is not impossible to do so in a wicked world. Walking with God requires obedience. God offers life. Are we walking with Him or away from Him? Continually examine yourself and make sure you are walking with God!
