Series: 2025 Bible ReadingAnd now, a minute with the Word…
Chapter 18 focuses on the power of words and the value of wisdom. In verse 2, “A fool takes no pleasure in understanding, but only in expressing his opinion.” In verse 7, a fool’s mouth is his ruin, and his lips are a snare to his soul.” In verse 21, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue.” Similarly in James 3:5-10, the tongue is powerful and can bless or destroy. Chapter 19 emphasizes integrity, patience, discipline, and trust in God’s providence. In verse 1, “Better is a poor person who walks in his integrity than one who is crooked in speech and is a fool.” Jesus said, “Blessed are the poor in spirit” and “the pure in heart” (Matthew 5:3, 8) In verse 18, the wise man wrote “Discipline your son, for there is hope.” Paul likewise wrote “Fathers, do not provoke your children, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.”
