And now, a minute with the Word…

Chapter 16 begins, “The plans of the heart belong to man, but the answer of the tongue is from the Lord.” (Verse 1). Also in verse 9, “The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps.” God directs our plans. In verse 24, “Gracious words are like a honeycomb, sweetness to the soul and health to the body.” Similarly in Ephesians 4:29, Paul urges the saints at Ephesus to not let corrupt talk come from their mouths “but what is good for building up… so that it gives grace to those that hear.” Chapter 17 closes with emphasis on wise speech. In verses 27-28, “Whoever restrains his words has knowledge, and he who has a cool spirit is a man of understanding. Even a fool who keeps silent is considered wise; when he closes his lips, he is deemed intelligent.” In James 1:19 brethren are likewise urged to be “quick to hear, slow to speak…”
