Chapter 12 contrasts the righteous and the wicked. In verse 1, “the righteous love instruction; the foolish hate correction.” Similarly, Hebrews 12:6 states “The Lord disciplines the one He loves…” In verse 6, “The words of the wicked lie in wait for blood, but the mouth of the upright delivers them.” Likewise in verse 18, “There is one whose rash words are like sword thrusts, but the tongue of the wise brings healing. Paul warned, “Let no corrupt talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up… that it may give grace to those who hear.” (Ephesians 4:29) Chapter 13 emphasizes the consequences of wise versus foolish living. In verse 3, “Whoever guards his mouth preserves his life; he who opens wide his lips comes to ruin.” Similarly, James cautioned brethren to, “let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger.
