Week 21, Day 3 — Psalm 56
Series: 2025 Bible ReadingAnd now, a minute with the Word…
Another of David’s prayer-psalms, Psalm 56 continues to teach us lessons that can help our own prayers.
David did not fear to repeat his prayers. Notice that verse 4 and verses 10-11 are parallel in thought and virtually identical in words (and quoted in Hebrews 13.6). Also note the sentiments that appear repeatedly in Psalms 54-59. And remember that both Jesus (Matthew 26.36-44) and the apostle Paul (2 Corinthians 12.8) prayed for the same thing three times.
But David also prayed unselfishly, i.e. ultimately seeking God’s glory, not his own. In Psalm 56, he wrote thrice of praising God’s word (verses 4 and 10), committed to performing his vows and thank offerings (verse 12), and anticipated his deliverance so that he might “walk before God in the light of life” (verse 13). Indeed, “To Him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity. Amen” (2 Peter 3.18).
