Week 21, Day 1 — Psalm 54
Series: 2025 Bible ReadingAnd now, a minute with the Word…
Psalms 54, 56, 57, and 59 are all said to have been written by David while he fled the unjust wrath of King Saul (1 Samuel 18ff). Psalms 55 and 58, also attributed to David, lack similar headings, but their placement in the book of Psalms and their similar content may suggest they fit the same historical context. All six of these psalms are prayers to God, so what does David teach us that can help our own prayers?
First, adversity did not drive David away from God; rather he prayed because “strangers have risen against me; ruthless men seek my life” (54.3). That is to say, David knew and trusted that “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble” (46.1).
