In response to the grandeur and power of “the LORD Most High,” Psalm 47.6-7 contain five exhortations to “Sing praises.” We live in a culture that is much more comfortable with listening to others sing; but God’s people are called to be participants, not spectators — “in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart” (Ephesians 5.19), “teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God” (Colossians 3.16), “let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that acknowledge his name” (Hebrews 13.15).
