Week 19, Day 1 — Psalm 44
Series: 2025 Bible ReadingAnd now, a minute with the Word…
Psalm 44 attributes Israel’s glorious past to God’s “deeds” (verse 1), “hand” (2-3), “arm” (3), “light” (3), “delight” (3), and “name” (5) — as verse 8 concludes, “In God we have boasted continually.” But this same psalm attributes Israel’s miserable present to God’s rejection (verses 9-16), despite their avowed innocence (17-22); and so they plea, “Awake” (23a), “Rouse yourself” (23b); “Rise up; come to our help! Redeem us for the sake of your steadfast love!” (26, emp. added). Even now, at our best and at our worst, we are wholly dependent upon the lovingkindness and mercy of God; because it is God “who [saves] us and [calls] us to a holy calling, not because of our works but because of his own purpose and grace, which he gave us in Christ Jesus before the ages began” (2 Timothy 1.9).
