In Mark 2.25-26, Jesus asked those who questioned His and His disciples’ respect of the Sabbath, “Have you never read what David did, when he…entered the house of God…and ate the bread of the Presence, which it is not lawful for any but the priests to eat, and also gave it to those who were with him?” Jesus plainly said that David did what was “not lawful” — desperate times did not permit otherwise unlawful conduct, and the end did not justify the means. “And why not do evil that good may come?—as some people slanderously charge us with saying. Their condemnation is just” (Romans 3.8).
