And now, a minute with the Word…
The Jews price Jesus’ value at 30 pieces of silver and ultimately exchange Him for a field to bury strangers in. The chief priests’ hesitancy to put the silver pieces in the treasury exposes their knowledge of Jesus’ innocence. Pilate recognizes that the Jewish leaders handed Jesus over because of envy. Jesus says little in front of Pilate, but does affirm Himself to be the King of the Jews. A sign is literally hung over His head on the cross that says “this is Jesus the King of the Jews.” The Jews are content to hand over their King to Roman soldiers, to be mocked and beaten, and they shout for their Messiah to be crucified and for His blood to be on them and their children. It is hard to imagine a more absolute rejection of the King of the Jews, and equally hard to imagine the Jews treating David, Solomon or any other of their flawed human kings in such a manner. Before He dies, the Son of David echoes David’s words from Psalm 22. Those who had eyes to see and ears to hear, like the centurion and those with him, acknowledge that Jesus truly is the Son of God.
